We are pleased to congratulate you on this special holiday and wish you a bright future, just like the pure-white canvas of the vyshyvanka. As a symbol of the identity of free people, it has gone with us through the terrible trials, struggled and triumphed, so that the current generation has the opportunity to touch its living force. It has always been, is and will always be a unique treasure, not only in the history of Ukraine, but of the whole world, and has already written itself into the achievements of international heritage. One of the eternal and unique puzzles of the diversity and multifaceted cultures of the planet.

Some History

Today, Ukraine celebrates Vyshyvanka Day – an international holiday aimed at preserving the ancient folk traditions of making and wearing the unique Ukrainian ethnic embroidered clothing, which is a symbol of our culture. It is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of May. It is not a public or religious and involves all comers. All you have to do is wear vyshyvanka.

The idea for the celebration came from Lesia Voroniuk, who was still a student at the time but is now a well-known social activist. In 2006, Lesia suggested that her classmates and acquaintances select a date and wear vyshyvankas together. The initiative was supported by students and professors of the faculty, but later the action acquired a nationwide scale, went beyond the borders of the country, reached our diasporas around the world and attracted supporters of Ukraine.

The original aim was to spread the cultural heritage to the modern generation, and this reminds us that we must cherish and preserve it for future Ukrainians. The Vyshyvanka is not only a legacy from our ancient and glorious ancestors, but also a symbol of invincible will. It embodies the strength and solidarity of the people, it gives motivation and a sense of unity. This holiday is a testament that together we can overcome any trials and win.
