Day of Remembrance and Mourning

Every nation has its important commemorative dates that symbolize historical events that significantly influenced its destiny and heritage. One such date in Ukraine is June 22 – the Day of Remembrance and Mourning, established by the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated November 17, 2000.

On June 22, 1941, the soldiers of the Third Reich crossed the border of the Ukrainian SSR, starting Operation Barbarossa. This day is considered the beginning of hostilities of the Second World War on the territory of Ukraine. In the following months and years, the local population witnessed repression, the destruction of villages and towns, mass executions, and deportations.

During the entire period of the war, the Ukrainian people actively fought against the invaders. Many Ukrainians joined the partisan movement, formed military units, took part in uprisings, and fought in the Soviet army.

Today, history repeats itself, only instead of the invaders, it is not German Nazis, but Russian rashists. And once again, the Ukrainian people courageously defend their right to existence, freedom, and independence.

So now the Day of Remembrance and Mourning for Ukrainians is not just a historical date when the memory of those killed in the Second World War is commemorated. It is a time to remember those who have passed and are passing through difficult trials, to honor the heroic deeds of our soldiers, and to remind people of the value of human life and the price of freedom.
