Today, Ukraine celebrates Statehood Day for the first time. And this year, the holiday is especially symbolic against the backdrop of the struggle of our people for freedom and justice.

On this day, Ukrainians honor the memory of figures of culture, science, sports, military, or public and political affairs – all those who made and are making a contribution to the development of our national assets, national unity, and independence.

History of Choosing a Holiday Date

Since 2008, the anniversary of the baptism of Kyivan Rus has been officially celebrated on July 28. This date was chosen to honor the memory of Prince Volodymyr. It was during his reign that Christianity became the state religion of Kyivan Rus.

Last year, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed to celebrate the Day of Ukrainian Statehood on July 28, since the moment of the baptism of Kyivan Rus can be considered the symbolic beginning of the countdown to modern Ukrainian statehood. The corresponding decree was signed on August 24, 2021, on the day of the 30th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.
