Every winter, Ukrainians look forward to the New Year holidays – for everyone, it is an opportunity not only to have plenty of rest but also to have fun with family and friends at holiday locations. This year, some cities have decided to abandon mass events, while others have carefully prepared holiday programs. Read about how much the city budgets spent (or could have spent) on New Year's purchases in our article.

Who Spent More than 1.5 Million Hryvnias to Prepare for the Holidays?

The country's main Christmas tree, which was installed on Sofia Square in Kyiv, and the accompanying decor were purchased mostly at the expense of outside investors and sponsors. Decorations for the Christmas tree cost about 2.7 million hryvnias, and each its tops – 75,000 hryvnias. Only the organization of the New Year's entertainment program "Parade of Cultures" was purchased at the expense of the city budget (2.5 million hryvnias were spent on it). District state administrations in 10 districts of the city were responsible for the installation of Christmas trees and the installation of illumination: on average, their purchases ranged from 100 to 200 thousand hryvnias and were carried out according to a simplified procedure.

The Dnipropetrovsk City Council spent 2.05 million hryvnias to purchase the main Christmas tree with accompanying decor. Besides, Christmas trees and decorations were installed in four parks of the city (installation and dismantling services cost 584,000 hryvnias), and the central square and the avenue were decorated with festive illumination for 3 million hryvnias.

The Donetsk Regional Council, which is currently located in Kramatorsk, acquired festive paraphernalia through pre-threshold procurement. Instead, the Mariupol City Council decided to decorate the city with a Christmas tree and decor worth 3.5 million hryvnias and paid 15,000 hryvnias for its installation.

Zaporizhia spent 1.8 million hryvnias on Christmas tree decoration, installation, and dismantling services for about 1,000 garlands to create a festive atmosphere.

Odessa City Council spent 1.47 million hryvnias to decorate the city streets. The installation of the Christmas tree itself cost 195,000 hryvnias, and the maintenance of light illumination – 165,000 hryvnias.

The Kharkiv prefabricated modular Christmas tree cost 2.96 million hryvnias, and another 1.4 million hryvnias were spent on its installation.

Cherkasy purchased services for the installation of a Christmas tree, garlands, installations, and other holiday decorations in the amount of 2.77 million hryvnias. The illumination itself cost 2.3 million hryvnias.

Record Holders in Budget Preparation for the Holidays

This year, the Zhytomyr City Council purchased Christmas garlands worth 153,000 hryvnias to decorate the city and organized holiday events worth 290,000 hryvnias.

The installation of a live Christmas tree in Lviv cost the state budget 77,500 hryvnias. Another 47,000 hryvnias were spent on Christmas tree protection and public order services.

By the way, not only Lviv practices the procurement of law enforcement services on New Year's holidays. For example, in Poltava a similar tender cost almost 52,000 hryvnias, in Sumy – 31,000 hryvnias, and in Khmelnytsky – 75,000 hryvnias.

Chernivtsi spent 93,000 hryvnias on the delivery and installation of Christmas trees in various parts of the city and another 29,800 hryvnias were spent on the installation of the frame and decoration of the main Christmas tree with 3D garlands.

The Mykolaiv City Council carried out tenders concerning installation and service of festive illumination for the total amount of over 100,000 hryvnias. Also, the organization of an entertaining holiday program "Winter holiday – in every home" cost 600,000 hryvnias.

Which Cities Have Abandoned Mass Events?

Vinnytsia City Council decided to comply with quarantine restrictions, and did not hold mass celebrations and even install a Christmas tree this year. In total, this saved about 1 million hryvnias of budget funds.

Rivne also abandoned the holiday program. Thanks to this, the City Council managed to save 561,400 hryvnias. But the obligatory holiday decor still appeared on the streets of the city – its installation cost the budget 46,000 hryvnias.
